So my friend Emily decided to start potting training her daughter this week and her success encouraged me to do the same. Actually, someone wrote a comment on one of her facebook status that pushed me over the edge. They said that it has to do more with the parent than the child. (Thanks Shannon for that little slap in the face :)) So I woke up this morning and decided that Cael and I were going to hit this potty training stuff head on. This is going to be long and if you don't want to hear about fluids that come out of your body then stop now. Consider yourself warned.
I tried to get him to put on his big boy underwear and sit on the potty. He fre.ak.ed. out on me. He kept bringing me a diaper and begging me to put it on him. I almost gave up right then and there. I decided to look and see if we could find some Diego episodes online (this is the one and only tv show that he loves). I was able to find some and that did the trick. I got him to sit on the potty and watch a shorten episode, about 12 minutes long, of Diego. I also had stickers and m&m's for him when he was done sitting, regardless of if he was successful or not.
We have tried to work on Cael potty training in the past and here has been my BIGGEST mistake. I didn't count it a success when only a few drops of pee came out. In my mind it needed to be a full blow release. Thank you Emily for changing my mind on that!
So, with that new mindset here is how our day went :
1st accident. It happened first thing this morning after trying to sit on the potty. We stayed at the dining room table all morning working on crafts, playing play dough, anything that would keep him right beside me. He got up to get some paper from the printer and I heard him say "oh no". I look and there was a very small puddle of pee. We ran to the bathroom and had our first success of the day. It was little, but it was something. Worst part...I wasn't even there to see it. I had run upstairs to change the laundry, came back and there was the pee.
4 small accidents. These took place from 10:00am until 5:30pm. I call them small because I didn't have to clean anything up. He would start to pee and then just look at me with big eyes. I would ask him if he peed, he would say yes and then we would run to the bathroom. His underwear would have a little wet spot on them and we would swap them out for new ones. But no big messes to clean up!
3 successful attempts. These happened from 10:00am until 5:30. Again, they were small but they counted. And guess what?? I missed them all. I figured out that he didn't really want me right there. I would sit in a chair in the bathroom reading or clean the kitchen so that I could see him. Every time he would tell me "I pee" and sure enough, he had peed.
1 major accident at dinner. Dad came home and we celebrated for a little while. I cooked dinner and while we were eating he peed, a lot.
Sometime during the day I had promised Cael ice cream, so after dinner Steve went to the store to get that, along with new underwear (we need more on hand), pretzels and more juice. When he came home we had several more successful attempts, I kinda lost track. But then the excitement happened!
**This is where TMI comes into place. Don't say I didn't warn you**
1 major success. We were hanging out in the bathroom again all three of us. I suggested to Cael that he push like he was "tooting". We went around the room with all of us pushing like we needed to toot. Gesh, the things we do for our kids. And guess what??? It worked! When he pushed like that he started to pee. And let me tell you, he didn't stop. For about 10 minutes he peed off and on. I have never seen a child pee that much in my entire life. We got so excited! You would have thought we had just won a million dollars. There were many high fives, hugs and kisses shared. I was really glad that Steve was home and got to share in Cael's first real FBE. Full Bladder Evacuation. (Steve came up with that all on his own, he was pretty proud of it.)
2 more major success' for the night. They were both FBE's.
I am really happy how today turned out but we still have aways to go. Here are the two big things we need to work on tomorrow:
Cael initiating. Every time today I was the one to initiate Cael going to the potty or asking him if he had peed. We need to work on him telling me when he has to go. (any suggestions are appreciated!)
Pooping. I didn't really expect this to happen on day one, but I had hoped! We told him today that if he pooped in the potty then he would get to sleep in our bed. Man he tried so hard! I felt sorry for the little guy. Hopefully he won't poop in his diaper tonight and we can make that happen tomorrow.
We have some friends in town this weekend and we are spending some time with them on Saturday. I am really torn about what to do. Do we put him in a pull up for the day or do we try it with big boy underwear on? I just don't want to ruin what we have started. I think tomorrow will help us determine how to handle Saturday.
Here are just a few pictures from our day, after all what's a post without pictures.
Cael in his big boy underwear and Gertie just chillin. More than likely some Angry Bird action was going on as well.
Steve went to the store and came back with boxer briefs (they look like shorts) and wife beaters. Crack me up!
Here is an updated lip picture, you can't see the full nastiness. Just trust me..it's there!
